Come Out & Play

PEAK Rowing welcomes everyone with an interest in gliding across the water, spending time in nature, and working and playing with others. Every athlete is unique, and we want to work with you to find the best way to get you into a boat and experiencing the joy of rowing.

We especially welcome veterans and those with disabilities. We can make modifications to equipment, coaching and program structure to accommodate veterans as well as people with physical and intellectual disabilities. As a USRowing Freedom Rows organization, we’re committed to making rowing accessible to all, regardless of ability.

Adaptive rowing is all about removing barriers to participation for anyone with an impairment or disability. Possible adaptations include:

Natalie Ormond

PRESIDENT
Natalie started rowing when her family was living in Bonn, Germany near the Rhein River in 2013. She was immediately obsessed and it has become her passion for exercise and recreation. She has since been a member with Rocky Mountain Rowing Club and has competed at indoor rowing events, Master’s regionals, nationals and worlds, plus many local regattas. A trained Doctor of Physical Therapy since 2010, Natalie brings her professional expertise and rowing experience to PEAK Rowing. She is a US Rowing level 2 certified coach.
DawnMarie Schwappach

COACH
A USRowing Coach and Referee, DawnMarie has served the rowing community for 20+ years. She has adapted her coaching to effectively reach juniors, seniors, veterans and adaptive athletes as well as those with Asperger’s, post concussive/traumatic brain injury and learning disabilities. Dedicated to the biomechanics of the sport, DawnMarie marries proper technique with a passion for helping rowers improve no matter where they begin. DawnMarie learned to row at the University of Notre Dame, where she served as an assistant coach. One of the nation’s first indoor rowing instructors, she developed a local program in 1996 which is still going strong today.
Shawn Dresser

MEMBERSHIP
Shawn started rowing in 2004 on Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis. During her time in Indiana, she was an active member of the Indianapolis Rowing Center, competing in both local and national events and serving on the club board and on various committees. For a number of years, she taught indoor rowing at an Indianapolis swim and racquet club. Shawn and her husband, both retired, moved to Denver in 2020 to be closer to family.
Roberta Spray

SECRETARY
Roberta started rowing as a walk-on at Princeton University in the early 80s and hasn't stopped her love of the sport since. She was a member of the Highlands Rowing Club in New Jersey until her move to Colorado in 2018, where she was baptized in the waters of Boulder Reservoir as a member of BCR. Upon her first scull purchase, Roberta moved her boat to the beautiful waters of Standley Lake in 2023. Roberta is a teacher of Social Studies at Boulder High School.
Sonia Monahan

TREASURER
Sonia and her teenage son decided to give rowing a try in 2018, enrolling in a Boulder Community Rowing learn-to-row program. Over the next two years, Sonia kept at it, launching in both sweep and sculling boats. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the family retreated to the small town of Granby where Sonia tested the waters of Lake Granby and Grand Lake in her single scull and oarboard. Today, Sonia splits her time between the Grand County high country and Boulder. She claims that no body of water matches flat Standley Lake’s wake-free oasis.
Roman Sammartino

ADMINISTRATION
Roman began his rowing journey with the esteemed Oakland Strokes Juniors, earning silver in Western Regionals as a Novice. He continued to excel at the University of Colorado and gained international experience at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Roman's dedication led him to the head coach position at CU and to refining his skills at the Institute for Rowing Leadership. He also coached at Boston University under Olympic medalist Tom Bohrer. Roman is currently the head coach of Colorado Junior Crew based at Boulder Reservoir.
Katja Stokley

AT-LARGE
Katja has been rowing both recreationally and competitively in Masters and Adaptive events since 2015 and is classified PR3 (formerly Legs, Trunk and Arms). She also competes in wheelchair road racing. She is committed to expanding rowing opportunities, both indoors and on the water, for people of all abilities here in the middle of the country where there is less water. Katja’s own rowing goals include staying sunny side up at all times, and getting to the finish line whenever possible. Katja is retired from a software engineering career in the aerospace industry.
Lisa McMath

MARKETING
A lover of all things floatable, Lisa McMath has been enamored with rowing since 2006. She grew up in Colorado and has been a member of several local rowing clubs. Lisa has competed in many regattas – from sprints to head races. With degrees in psychology and journalism, Lisa runs her own successful marketing firm.
